UCD O’Brien Centre for Science

Where Innovation Meets Discovery

UCD O'Brien Centre
When we started designing the UCD O’Brien Centre for Science at RKD Architects, we wanted to help create something more than just an updated facility. We envisioned a dynamic hub where research and learning would come together – a place where innovation thrives and ideas converge.
Our challenge wasn’t just to modernize the existing buildings but to design a space that inspires interaction and scientific discovery. We wanted the architecture to feel contemporary and forward-thinking, while also supporting the cutting-edge needs of modern science.
By blending contemporary architectural design with cutting-edge infrastructure, we aimed to reflect the dynamic nature of scientific progress while fostering a sense of openness and collaboration.
UCD O'Brien Centre

At the heart of the UCD O’Brien Centre for Science, we envisioned a vibrant hub where collaboration and interdisciplinary engagement could thrive.

We envisioned the Science Centre East as a place where ideas could thrive. That’s why we included features like the 3D visualization theatre, curated galleries, interactive exhibitions, and cutting-edge research labs – all designed to encourage the cross-pollination of ideas. We also made sure to integrate modern teaching facilities for life sciences, biology, and geology, creating a space where the next generation of scientists can grow.

At the centre of it all is the expansive atrium – a welcoming space where students, researchers, and faculty come together to share knowledge and spark new ideas. We wanted this open, inclusive space to reflect the interconnected nature of science, where collaboration drives progress.

The idea was also to make the research process visible – to let people see how science comes to life through collaboration. That’s why we decided to integrate the laboratory spaces into the internal atrium gallery. We wanted anyone walking through to feel the energy of scientific inquiry.

The projected boxes, designed as seating areas accessible from both the gallery circulation and the laboratories, become democratic spaces for discussion and reflection. These areas not only maintain the connection to the scientific process but also encourage informal exchanges and dialogue. They serve as meeting points, where the spirit of collaborative science reaches into the open atrium space, blending structured research with spontaneous conversation.

Our goal was to create a space that naturally sparks dialogue and fosters interdisciplinary breakthroughs. We believe that when ideas and expertise intersect, that’s when science truly thrives.

UCD OBraien Centre

Our goal was to make the entrance more than just a gateway. We envisioned it as a symbol of human potential – an open and inviting space that reflects the limitless pursuit of knowledge. The form bends and opens up, welcoming visitors into a place where scientific exploration thrives.

Inside, we combined light, space, and materiality to create an environment that’s both functional and inspiring – a space that supports research while fostering innovation and collaboration.

The O’Brien Centre represents a landmark of progress – where architecture and discovery come together, pushing the boundaries of human understanding. Seeing it come to life as a dynamic hub for learning makes us proud.
